An Introduction to Hand-building Clay for Kids. 4 classes – 90 minutes each.

In this class kids will learn pinch pot, coil, and slab techniques to create functional pottery and expressive creations. They will learn to join clay and make impressions in the clay using various objects and tools. Their pottery (about 5 pieces) will be fired in a kiln so they can glaze it.

About the event
Students will learn how to create in clay using pinch pot, coil, and slab techniques.
Students will learn how to correctly join clay, a three-step process, for adding handles, feet, noses, arms, etc.
Students will learn how to manipulate the surface of the clay using various tools.
Details:
Students will make some functional pottery such as a spoon dish which can be used and or given as a gift.
Students will be encouraged to make expressive creations such as an animal that can be painted with underglazes and glaze.
Students will be stamping, and making impressions in creations with found objects, leaves, seashells, stamps, and special clay stamps applied with a small roller.
Dried creations will be fired for the first time so that students can glaze (and underglaze) their pieces. Their glazed work will be fired again. Note: glazing makes it waterproof.
Students will create about 5 pieces. Their creations will be ready for pick up a week after the last class.
